SAFE DRIVING HABITS FOR SUMMER

SAFE DRIVING HABITS FOR SUMMER

Published On June 29, 2018

During summer, more people are on the road than at any other time of year. Families go on vacation, teenagers take road trips, and traffic in cities and suburbs generally becomes heavier. This means a greater risk of accidents. Especially on Memorial Day, Labor Day, and 4th of July, the accident rate skyrockets. That is why it is important to practice safe driving habits to keep you and the ones you love safe during your travels.

Here are three tips for safe driving during summer:

  1. Avoid distractions. Carpooling with friends on road trips is a fun way to travel. However, it also increases the amount of distraction for the driver. If you are giving friends a ride, even if it’s just to the grocery store or a nearby party, make sure they know not to distract you. Have them avoid making loud or sudden noises, and also warn them against physically trying to get your attention or verbally demanding your focus. Your attention should be on the road, and it is important for you to keep safety a top priority.
  2. Pay attention to road conditions. While summer often brings warm weather and sunny skies, it is important to pay attention to road conditions. Dry, hot weather can cause cracks in the road; and if you are driving in the late afternoon, the sun may hang low in your eyes, limiting your ability to see other drivers. Always pack an extra pair of sunglasses in the glove compartment, and pay attention to any weather or road conditions that may threaten your safety.
  3. Drive defensively. Defensive driving involves keeping a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, using signals properly, and being aware of other drivers around you. It is also a good idea to monitor your speed, look ahead at traffic and road conditions, and be mindful of any distractions that could take your eyes off the road. By practicing defensive driving, you can increase your safety and protect those around you.
