6 HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR TRICK-OR-TREATER

6 HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR TRICK-OR-TREATER

Halloween is nearly here! If you have children who will be trick-or-treating this year, then safety is, of course, your top priority. Pedestrian accidents significantly increase on Halloween night, and unfortunately, many of the victims are young children who are out trick-or-treating. Emergency room visits also tend to increase on Halloween night involving everything from trip-and-fall injuries, auto accident injuries, and even poisonings from glow sticks.

In order to help you protect your children this year, please keep the following safety tips in mind:

  1. Add glow sticks or reflective tape to your child’s costume to increase their visibility as they walk outside at night – but make sure your child knows not to put glow sticks in their mouths!
  2. Always chaperone young trick-or-treaters and ensure that they walk on the sidewalk, not in the street.
  3. Instruct your children to use crosswalks, to look both ways before entering the street, and to never dart out into the street from between parked cars.
  4. Ensure that your child’s costume is non-flammable, fits well, and does not present a tripping hazard or obstruct their field of vision.
  5. Always test novelty makeup on a small area of your child’s skin BEFORE applying it to their face to avoid a potentially serious allergic reaction.
  6. Only use carving tools specially designed for pumpkins instead of sharp kitchen knives that could become stuck and cause laceration injuries.

We hope you find these safety tips helpful and hope you, your family, and your friends enjoy a happy and SAFE Halloween!
